Telegram is an end-to-end encrypted messaging service that has been adopted by a lot more people — as of last year, the company claimed more than 50 Million Telegram users sending 1 Billion messages per day. Telegram has incorporated a number of cool security features that we feel deserve a mention here.

1Public Username

Setting up a public username allows anybody to find you under global search results. Anybody can send you messages when they find you using your username but they won’t be able to see your phone number. You can opt out of setting up a username and you can change your username however much you like or delete it completely.

Doing this, you will no longer be ‘searchable’ in Telegram global results and the only people who will know you have a Telegram account are those who already have your phone number saved in their contacts.

22-Step Authentication

Enabling 2-Step Authentication adds another layer of security on top of your passcode. In addition to a code you get by SMS to your phone, you will be required to enter the other passcode as well. A recovery email can be used to reset the 2-Step authentication in case you lose your phone.

3Active Sessions

We know you love Telegram for its seamless multi-device sync. And since there are native Telegram apps for all major mobile, tablet and desktop OSs, a lot of you folks must be logged into your Telegram accounts from several devices at once. This screen shows all your logged in devices with IP info. You can also close any sessions that are outdated or (God forbid!) suspicious.

4Account Self Destruct

Telegram accounts automatically self-destruct after a period of inactivity, 1 month being the default time period. However this can be adjusted for up to 1 year after which all your databases consisting of contacts, messages and media will be wiped clean from Telegram servers. This process is irreversible.

5Secret Chats

Secret chats use end-to-end encryption. This means that all data is encrypted with a key that only you and the recipient know. There is no way for anybody else without direct access to your device to learn what content is being sent in those messages.

Telegram do not store your secret chats on servers or keep any logs for messages in secret chats. For the same reasons secret chats are not available in the cloud — you can only access those messages from the device they were sent to or from.
