In May of 1987, an arsonist burned nearly all of Tom Petty’s house in Los Angeles to the ground. And while most people would run in terror, Petty stayed. According to American Songwriter, “While his wife and daughter stayed at a friend’s place in Beverly Hills, Tom began rebuilding the house on the same plot of land, using his basement recording studio – one of the few rooms to survive the blaze – as the foundation. He wasn’t going to back down to any fire starter.”

This decision would set in motion his first hit single as a solo artist. Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’ meaning shows that he was not going to flinch. Although the arsonist may have thought he would blink, he didn’t. Petty also enjoyed solo success but always returned to the Heartbreakers, releasing their final album in 2014.
