The News of a Lesbian Couple Being Chosen as co-pastors Will truly Surprise You!
Co-pastors Maria Swearingen and Sally Sarratt met members of the 155-year-old Calvary Baptist church last weekend, and will formally start in their new leadership roles next month.
Sarratt, who holds an MBA from the University of Virginia, left the corporate world after she felt called to ministry and obtained her master's in theological studies from Emory University.
Swearingen, who is fluent in English and Spanish, earned a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School, where she won an award for her preaching
Carol Blythe, chair of the committee that chose the couple as its new leaders spoke to Baptist News.
“We were impressed by how their gifts, talents and experience matched our ministry priorities — and we are thrilled about their upcoming pastorate and the versatility the co-pastor model will provide our congregation.”
